Mutton Bone Soup Recipe

 Bone soup or Nenju elumbu soup or maarkanda elumbu soup or nenjelumbu chaaru is mutton rib bones soup.  It is rich in minerals that support the immune system and said to have healing properties. This is also known as mutton rasam.

It is that traditional healing food of the past which got acknowledged recently. Bone broth has been a remedy for ages in many households for treating flu, cold and cough. The boiling of the bones releases some vital nutrients that are very beneficial for those who are suffering from weakness and are recovering from diseases.

Mutton rib bone soup with added spices makes it  more tastier and healthier ☘️

Ingredients 

Lamb/Mutton chops/ribs - 250 gms

  • Water - 2 cups
  • Rice washed water - 1 cup 
  • Whole spices
    • Cinnamon/pattai - 1 inch
    • Clove/krambu - 1 or 2
    • Peppercorns/milagu - 2 tsp
    • Cumin seeds/jeeragam - 2 tsp
    • Aniseed/sombu - 1 tsp
    • Coriander seeds -2 tsp 
    • Pepper powder - 1 tsp
    • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Small onions/shallots -12 no’s
  • Garlic pods - 8nos
  • Ginger - 1”
  • Coriander leaves chopped 
  • Salt

Procedure

  • Wash the mutton ribs / nenju elumbu twice and then wash with rock salt and turmeric powder.
  • In a pressure cooker add the mutton
  • (Note - We are crushing the ingredients in a mortar pestle so that the essence of the spices seep well into the broth.)
    • To this crush and add the following 
    • small onions 
    • garlic
    • ginger
    • Cinnamon 
    • Clove
    • Peppercorns
    • Cumin
    • Sombu
    • Coriander seeds 
  • Pour water and the rice washed water( this is to give slight thickness and extra boost of minerals)
  • Add turmeric 
  • Pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles
  • Once pressure is released naturally open the cooker add salt and coriander leaves and Pepper powder
  • Allow to boil for 5 more minutes 
  • Switch off flame and serve hot
